Motion JPEG as a Full-Size AVI

Posted by Stefan Geißler on November 23, 2006

In principle, any codec can be used to create AVI files. However, many codecs require too much processing power to be used for real-time image compression.

Typical MPEG 2 or MPEG 4 compressors - for example - will not be able to work at full resolution with a frame rate higher than about 10 fps on a 1GHz processor. Higher frame rates can be achieved by reducing the image size to 320x240 pixels, deploying a more powerful CPU or selecting a faster codec.

A good choice for full-size AVIs is the Motion JPEG codec.

The Motion JPEG codec is ideal, if you are developing webcam software, surveillance systems, and other kinds of video systems with IC Imaging Control. The codec offers a complete, software-only solution and thus eliminates the need for expensive compression chipsets.
